ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano here on Tuesday.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif told the IAEA Director General that Pakistan was committed to nuclear non-proliferation. The prime minister said Pakistan’s nuclear power plants and research centres were working under the supervision and according to laws of the IAEA.
Prime Minister Sharif added that Pakistan was fulfilling all stipulations of the IAEA. The prime minister informed the IAEA DG that Pakistan’s nuclear programme was secure and for peaceful purposes.
Prime Minister Shairf said Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) was helping the country meet its power requirements. He added that with the help of IAEA, Pakistan was making use of nuclear technology in several areas including power production, medicine, agriculture, food preservation and water management for the benefit of its people.
The prime minister appreciated the positive role played by the Agency in the development of peaceful use of nuclear technology in Pakistan, for human resource development in various scientific disciplines and establishment of R&D facilities at different centers in the country.
He said PAEC has benefited significantly from IAEA’s program on Cancer Therapy and Control in member states. Every year, a large number of its scientists and engineers benefit from IAEA sponsored activities and share their knowledge and experience in specific fields while Pakistani experts render valuable services to other IAEA Member States.
The prime minister told Mr. Amano, the government of Pakistan valued its relationship with IAEA and this cooperation shall be strengthened in the future.
The IAEA DG appreciated Pakistan’s commitment to use of nuclear energy for benefit of its people and extended his support for the cause.
