PM to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in bid to ease recent tensions between Riyadh and Tehran

ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif reached Tehran from Riyadh on Tuesday, the second day of their peace mission to Saudi Arabia and Iran to ease rising tensions between the two brotherly Muslim countries.

According to the foreign office, the prime minister is scheduled to meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and will discuss ways to ease tensions between the two countries.

According to our correspondent, the top Pakistani civilian and military leaders also held a consultative meeting with other accompanying officials on the plane before landing in the Iranian capital.

Iran's Defence Minister Hossein Dehqan greeted PM Sharif and the Pakistani delegation upon their arrival at the airport.

The Iranian minister said that Pakistan was playing a very important role at a critical juncture.

Islamabad is trying to play the role of a mediator in the escalating dispute between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which grew after the execution of a prominent cleric by Riyadh sparked a bitter row between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia's execution of the cleric earlier this month was followed by Iranian demonstrators ransacking the Saudi embassy in Tehran and the Saudi consulate in Mashhad, prompting several of Riyadh's allies to break off diplomatic ties with Iran.
