DHARAMSALA: Oman made a sensational start to their campaign in the ICC World T20 with a thrilling two-wicket victory over Ireland in their Group A Preliminary Round match in Dharamsala on Wednesday.

Batting first, Ireland scored 154 for five in 20 overs. GC Wilson 38, captain Porterfield and his opening partner Stirling 29 each remained notable contributors from the ‘king of the associates’.

Munis Ansari grabbed three wickets while Aamir Kaleem and Khawar Ali shared a wicket each for Oman.

Oman chased down the target on the penultimate delivery of last over scoring 156 for 8 wickets.

Openers Zeeshan Maqsood made 38 and his opeing partner Khawar Ali scored 34 to give the Gulf state a great start. Aamer Ali with 32 and Jatinder Singh 24 helped them cross the line in a nail-biting finish to the encounter.

Kevin O’Brien, McBrine and Max Sorensen grabbed two wickets each while Rankin took one for Ireland.

Oman will play the Netherlands next on Friday and then complete their group engagements against Bangladesh on Sunday.

The top team from the group advance to the Super 10 stage of the tournament.
