Medical student hangs himself from ceiling fan in alleged suicide

KARACHI: A medical student allegedly committed suicide on Thursday by hanging himself from the ceiling fan.

The student was enrolled in the second year of the school of nursing at a private university.

The university administration confirmed the suicide and said that it will notify the media of further details after they complete investigation.

"The student was a resident of Gilgit. He committed suicide atthe university hostel," a spokesman for the university said.

He had taken admission in 2014 and was studying on a scholarship, the spokesman added.

Last week, a final-year student at the Hamdard University self-immolated after he was barred from sitting in the exam for arriving late.

Abdul Basit, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery student at the Hamdard University, reached the exam centre late after his motorbike broke down, his family said.

Disheartened, he doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire, police claimed.

He was rushed to the Civil Hospital with 95 percent burns, doctors said, but his injuries proved too severe.
