Senate committee asks govt to try MQM founder for high treason

ISLAMABAD: Senate’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice on Thursday requested the government to register a case against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain under Article 6 of the Constitution.

ChairmanJaved Abbasi said that the committee unanimously understands that those who talked against Pakistan should be strictly punished.

One of the committee’s members said that those who take MQM founder’s name would be considered enemies of the state.

Senator Babar Awan inquired if the approval for the reference sent to the Britain against the MQM founder was sought from the federal cabinet or the law ministry.

“Is a reference against a political party being submitted to the Supreme Court?” asked the senator.

The committee directed the Secretary Law to submit written response to all the queries.

Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Wednesday had met with British High Commissioner to Pakistan Thomas Drew, urging the UK authorities to take action against MQM founder in light of the reference sent by Pakistan.

The Interior Minister had said that Pakistan had sent evidence against MQM founder and British government should take action against him.

Earlier on August 22, MQM workers turned to violence after being told by their party chief to surround the offices of Geo News, Samaa and ARY in Karachi.

During his address, the MQM supremo reportedly also made statements against Pakistan and urged activists to voice slogans against the country.

The Article six of the Constitution deals withpunishment for high treason.
