KARACHI: The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights on Friday questioned Sindh Rangers aboutcases of 'missing persons' reported in Karachi.
During the committee session chaired by Senator Nasreen Jalil, Rangers were also asked aboutarrests carried out during raids in Karachi.
Senator Farhatullah Babar asked Sindh Rangers the reason behind the arrest of 6,000 people in Karachi. The law enforcers were also asked why these people were let go after being arrested.
Brigadier Khurram Shehzad, briefing the committee in response to the questions, said the Rangers conduct raids and make arrests in accordance with the law and release people found to be innocent.
Rangers officials also said that a video had surfaced yesterday in which Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder was heard telling party workers to go ‘missing’.
Rangers said that the people who go into hiding for political reasons are also classified as ‘missing’. Some people are missing due to political reasons whereas some have been kidnapped, the Rangers added.
Additional IGsuggestedto the committee that the families of those persons who have been missing for more than two years and have no criminal records should be compensated.
Talking to the media later,Nasreen Jalil said that a classification system should be in place for missing persons so that reasons behind their disappearance can be ascertained. She added that the committee was not happy with the absence of DG Rangers and IG from the session.
