KARACHI: Waqar Younis, the former captain and coach of Pakistan Cricket team, has requested India and Pakistan to play cricket for the sake of fans around the world.
Pakistan and India haven’t played a full series since 2007 due to political tension between the two countries, although Pakistan visited India for a short bilateral series in 2012/13.
“India and Pakistan, lets play cricket,” Waqar tweeted on Tuesday morning. “World is desperate and waiting for Pakistan vs India series,” the former captain said.
Waqar, who is now performing duty as a TV commentator during Pakistan vs New Zealand series, appealed and requested the Indian Cricket Board to rethink its approach at playing cricket with Pakistan.
“Request, please think of the fans,” Waqar added in his tweet.
India was recently penalised by the ICC for not honoring ICC women championship series against Pakistan by forfeiting 6 points in Pakistan’s favor.
BCCI’s president Anurag Thakur, who is also a member of Lok Sabha representing the ruling BJP, had last month ruled out the possibility of reviving bilateral cricket ties with Pakistan in near future, saying even considering such a thought is not appropriate.
According to some reports, the Indian board is also not willing to play ICC Champions’ Trophy match against arch rivals Pakistan.
Cricket officials from Pakistan and India will meet on December 17 in Colombo, Sri Lanka to discuss the strained and suspended bilateral cricket between the two neighbors, a source within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Monday.
The PCB official, who requested anonymity, said the meeting would be held during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meet in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan, who is also the Chairman of the ACC will be accompanied by Najam Sethi and Subhan Ahmad in the meeting, he said.
