ISLAMABAD: Parliamentarians shared bitter lessons the country had learnt from the fall of Dhaka in 1971, which cut off an entire part of the country, then known as East Pakistan.
Forty five years ago today, the Pakistan Army surrendered in East Pakistan, which was then declared an independent country Bangladesh.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Nehal Hashmi said, “We thought our leaders were brave, they will lead us and protect us. But they surrendered cowardly,” he said.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan leader Khushbakht Shujaat said that all Bengalis living in Pakistan before 1971 should be declared Pakistani.
Others questioned what happened to the Hamood-ur-Rehman commission, which had been formed to find out reasons for the Dhaka fall.
“What were our mistakes? Have we acknowledged them? Have learnt anything? Have the people responsible been punished?” PPP leader Nafisa Shah said.
Hafiz Hamdullah of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islami said, “Why have the finding of the Hamood ur Rehman commission not been revealed?”
