KARACHI: FIFA, the world governing body of football, has indicated that it wants Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) elections according to timeline decided by its member association committee.
A FIFA spokesman told Geo.tv on Wednesday that it has sent a letter to PFF giving a road map decided by the FIFA’s member associations committee.
The spokesman further added that it has also requested PFF to provide information regarding Supreme Court of Pakistan’s order to have elections in PFF within a month.
"We can confirm that FIFA has yesterday sent a letter to the PFF including a roadmap, which is in line with the decision taken during the last meeting of FIFA’s Member Associations Committee, and requesting information about the alleged decision made by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to order the PFF to hold elections within a month," the spokesman said.
"FIFA will be in a position to comment further once additional information from PFF has been received," he said regarding FIFA’s position on court verdict on PFF elections.
The FIFA had earlier extended Faisal Saleh Hayat’s mandate as PFF president till March 2020 with clear indications to revise PFF’s statutes to align them with the FIFA's.
However, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, had announced fresh elections in PFF earlier this month.
The elections are now tentatively scheduled for December 12 in which Faisal Saleh Hayat faces a challenge from PTI’s MNA Malik Amir Dogar and Zahir Shah.
There’s no official comment from Hayat but sources believe that the group is likely to challenge Dogar’s candidacy based on his eligibility to contest PFF’s elections.
Meanwhile, Dogar – who is from the ruling PTI – met with Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday to apprise him of his resolve to contest the PFF elections.
A spokesman for PM Khan confirmed his meeting with Dogar saying matters relating to sports, in general, and football, in particular, were discussed.
