ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee on Wednesday was advised to provide a subsidy worth Rs1.5 billion to non-commercial tandoors — or clay oven-owners selling bread — after Prime Minister Imran Khan took notice of the rising prices of rotia day prior.
The decision was made during an ECC meeting led by the adviser to the PM on Finance, Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh. The provinces were also directed to ensure that prices of roti— or bread — were reduced.
The subsidy — worth exactly Rs1.51 billion — would be provided by reducing the cost of gas supply to thenon-commercial tandoors.
On Tuesday, PM Imran Khan had taken notice of a recent rise in the prices of roti and ordered that previous prices be restored.
The premier had announced the move during a Cabinet meeting wherein the country's economic situation was pondered upon and important decisions were made.
In a press briefing following the Cabinet meeting, the PM's special assistant on information, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, had said the premier took notice of the rise in the roti prices during the session and ordered that previous prices be restored.
He also advised the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to take measures in this regard, she had added.
