SC not government ordered FIA to investigate Asghar Khan case: Kaira
ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said Tuesday that it was the Supreme Court and not the government which had ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate the Asghar Khan case.

Kaira told reporters during a news conference that a decision regarding the government formed following the 1990 elections was yet to be made.

The IJI had started forming prior to Benazir Bhutto’s arrival in Pakistan in 1986, Kaira said. The Information Minister accused agencies of manipulating the 1988 elections.

The news conference by the Information Minister was meant to answer criticism levelled by senior members of the PML-N who have been advocating that an independent commission and not the FIA probe the Asghar Khan case.

The Supreme Court in its ruling in the Asghar Khan case had stated that the 1990 elections were rigged.
