LAHORE: Ahle Sunaat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) has called off a sit-in it staged on Mall Road with the body of slain provincial leader, Maulana Shams-ur- Rehman Muawiya, who was gunned down a day earlier, Geo News reported.
Earlier, the ASWJ workers put the body of ASWJ Punjab President Maulana Shams-ur- Rehman Muawiya outside Masjid-e-Shuhda on Mall Road demanding of the provincial government to bring his killers to task right away.
According to sources the ASWJ leadership decided to end the sit-in after getting assurances by the Punjab government with regards to their demands.
Later, Maulana Muawiya's funeral prayer was offered on Mall Road outside Masjid-e-Shuhda.
Earlier, protestors demanded the arrest of Mualana Muawiya’s killers vowing to continue the sit-in until they were contacted by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Protests against Maulana Muawiya’s killing were held in several cities on Saturday. In the twin cities, protestors blocked traffic on the motorway. The Kashmir Highway and Murree Road have also been blocked by protestors.
The ASWJ leader was killed when unknown gunmen attacked his car on Ravi Road in Lahore. He was returning home after offering Friday prayers.
