KARACHI: Jamaat-e Islami (JI) here Wednesday expressed grave concern on escalating incidents of extortion and killings in Karachi, saying targeted killings of political activists in the city is a gruesome trend that should be checked immediately.

JI Karachi chapter Amir Muhammad Hussain Mehanti, addressing a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq, said that the dubious policy of ‘political reconciliation’ of the PPP-led had converted Karachi into a slaughterhouse. He said after killing spree of innocent citizens, now the activists of peaceful political and religious parties are being targeted.

He said the recent brutal murder of JI worker Abdul Rasheed Farooqui is a bid to create new polarization in the city and further damage its peace.

He said that JI would urge all political parties to get united on one-point agenda of restoring peace in Karachi. He said a firm action against the target killings and extortion has become overdue. He said in this regard his party would stage a protest demo on July 27 in New Karachi while a ‘Shahadat Conference’ would be held on August 9.

JI leader expressing serious concern on ongoing target killings in the city said that after a brief lull, the criminal mafias had once again started murdering the innocent people, adding at least 1200 people have been killed in Karachi this year so far. He said that it was a tragedy that the target killers carry out their job even when the President and the Prime Minister are present in the city.

He said the responsibility of bloodbath of innocent citizens rests on the ruling coalition parties including Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP).

He said not only Abdul Rasheed Farooqui, but other JI activists Imran and Tajammul have also brutally murdered in Karachi. He demanded the government should act sanely and take concrete steps to apprehend the criminals and killers to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities of protection of lives of Pakistani citizens.
