KARACHI: Leader Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Dr Farooq Sattar Sunday said no democratic government has ever conducted local bodies elections.

Addressing a gathering in Ranchor Line area here, Dr Sattar said had there been a local bodies system in place in Karachi, the project of mass transit would have been completed by now. He, however, added that talks are underway with Japan in connection with the mass transit project.

It is pertinent to note hare that earlier today the Punjab government launched Rs30-billion bus service on modern lines for a 27-kilometre route in Lahore. The bus service will provide free rides to the citizens for four weeks.

Commenting on the upcoming general elections in the country, Dr Farooq Sattar said President Zardari had asked for nominations for the caretaker prime minister.

The MQM's central leader said consultations are being held with other political parties while deliberations are being made by his party's Rabitta Committee in connection with the installation of caretaker government.
