KARACHI: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Thursday emphasizing the role of subordinate courts towards dispensation of justice, directed the returning officers (ROs) not to bow down before any pressure in discharging their responsibilities.

“Fair and transparent elections are essential to strengthen democracy,” the Chief Justice said while addressing a gathering of ROs and assistant returning officers here.

Pointing to the returning officers, Justice Iftikhar Chuadhry said ‘keep discharging your duties professionally, giving no regard to any pressure’.

He said the nation is in need of judiciary in its time of trial, stressing that the ROs have to deliver equal justice to both the voters and candidates.

The CJ said that the progress of any nation is linked to the continuity of a democratic system. In order to achieve this, principles will have to be strictly followed, he stressed.
