ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Sunday arrived Iran on a two-day official visit at the invitation of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The prime minister will hold bilateral meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and call on the spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenai, according foreign office spokesperson.

Bilateral talks will focus on strengthening economic ties.

Memoranda of understanding and agreements on cooperation in various fields would also be signed during the visit of the Prime Minister.

Sources said that Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline project and Iran’s financial assistance and other relaxations regarding the project would also come under threadbare discussions during the visit of the prime minister. The prime minister would also assure the Iranian leadership that it was quite serious in completion of this project

This would be the first leadership level visit since the formation of new governments in the two countries.

A high-ranking delegation comprising among others, Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Federal Ministers Ishaq Dar, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs, Tariq Fatemi and Chief Minister Balochistan Dr Abdul Malik also accompanied the prime minister.
