Tranporters deny Karachi commuters relief from fuel price reduction

KARACHI: The government may have reduced fuel prices, but residents of the port city of Karachi have been denied any major relief as transport fares remain largely unchanged.

Transporters have been running their busses illegally on compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of the regular Diesel fuel and have demanded that fares will go down, only if the price of CNG is reduced.

The government had given relief in fuel prices effective November 1st, reducing the price of Diesel fuel by Rs. 6.18/liter. However, the base transport fare remains unchanged at Rs.10 for mini-busses and coaches, while higher fare slabs have been reduced by only Rs.1

Karachi Tranport Ittehad President, Arshad Bukhari has responded that transport fares in Karachi are lower than the rest of the country and therefore fares have been reduced by only Rs.1.
