The world’s fifth-largest democracy is going to witness the nationwide polls on February 8 with 128 million eligible voters, constituting over half of its total population, to elect the new rulers. Prior to the new delimitations in November last year as per the 2023 digital census data, this National Assembly constituency was renamed “NA-56 Rawalpindi” from “Attock-II” by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). A total of 29 candidates are vying for the NA seat in the 2024 polls, including some political bigwigs from major parties. The candidates include the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) central leader Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, the AML chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, JUI-F’s Muhammad Zia Ur Rehman Amazai, PAT’s Muhammad Nadeem, PTI-backed independent candidates — Shehryar Riaz and Ejaz Khan Jaazi, PPP’s Sumaira Gul, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party’s (IPP) Sharjeel Mir, and others. The seat had been secured by PML-N’s Malik Sohail Khan in by-polls held in the constituency in October 2018 after defeating PTI’s Malik Khurrum Ali Khan.
