Coal mine collapse in Russia, 90 feared trapped underground

As many as 90 coal miners are feared trapped underground in Vorkuta, Russia following a mine collapse.

According to Russian media, the collapse was likely caused due to suspected brittle rock burst in Severnaya coal mine located beyond the Arctic Circle in the northern Russian Komi Republic.

Due to the mines location, it is difficult to reach.

Russian Emergency Ministry confirmed to Russian media, that as many as 90 workers could be trapped underground. The ministry however offered assurances that the situation was under control and the miners were being evacuated in small groups.
