Chief Justice returns to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Chief Justice Anwar Zaheel Jamali returned to Pakistan after an official visit to Turkey on Saturday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had written a letter to the chief justice seeking to set up a judicial commission to probe the issue of Panama Papers, after opposition parties rejected his earlier announcement that a commission headed by a retired judge would look into the matter.

The commission was delayed due to CJ's scheduled visit to Turkey.

The government of Nawaz Sharif has been facing immense pressure from opposition, particularly Imran Khan, since massive leak of tax data from a Panamanian Law firm.

The leaked data revealed offshore business interests of several world leaders, their friends and members of their families. Names of prime minister's children also appeared in the data, stirring a political storm in Pakistan.

The opposition had threatened to mount a protest march on Raiwind if a judicial commission headed by the chief justice was not formed to probe the issue.

The prime minister has rejected all the allegations of  wrongdoings and announced during his  televised address that he would quit the office if accusations are proved against him.
