KARACHI: Pakistan’s first animated television series ‘Burka Avenger’ is in the running for an International Emmy Kids Award. The series tells the story of martial arts expert Jiya, who fights for peace, education and women’s rights.
Adorning a burka, a long flowing garment that covers the body from head to toe and is often perceived to be the sign of oppressed women who are forced to cover themselves, Jiya fights evil and the villains in the imaginary land of Halwapur.
The series which first aired on Geo Tez has won multiple awards including an American Peabody award and an Asian Media Award.
The very first episode, highlighting the importance of education for girls, has been nominated for the International Emmy Kids Award which will take place in New York on Friday the 20th of February.
The ceremony in New York will be attended by Director Haroon Rashid and Ainny Jafri the Pakistani model who voiced Jiya for the series.
