The real problem
This refers to Ayaz Amir's article "150 years of Lawrence College" (October 8). He wonders why the 'English-educated leadership class' has failed to provide good leadership to the country. Two reasons come to mind: first, the products of institutions like Lawrence and Aitcheson College are more or less glorified matriculates. Very few of the alumni go on to become truly educated men.
Second, the kind of education imparted in these institutions alienates the students from the values and culture of the vast majority of the Pakistani public. The English-educated class thus operates under a tremendous handicap when it comes to providing leadership to the people. Their failure should come as no surprise.
