Mobile services suspended in Indian occupied Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Indian authorities suspended all mobile telephony services except postpaid connections of state-run BSNL citing possible protests after Friday prayers.

“Mobile telephony services have been snapped in the entire Valley. Only postpaid connections of BSNL are working,” a police official said, as reported by the Indian Express.

Services were suspended at midnight.

The suspension comes after Kashmiris protests against Indian atrocities in the valley after Friday prayers last week. The people were killed and several hundred were injured at the hands of Indian forces.

Mobile services were suspended last month on the 15th after freedom fighter Burhan Wani was martyred by Indian forces on the 8th of July.

The following day internet facility in the valley was also suspended and has remained so even on the 35th day.

While postpaid mobile services were restored later in July, postpaid consumers were only granted incoming call facilities.

Since July many dozens of Kashmiri youth have lost their eyesight after Indian forces resorted to using pellet guns on unarmed civilians.

In the week following Burhan Wani’s martyrdom, a doctor treating victims of pellet injuried told AFP, "Most of them have lost their eyesight in one eye. They are going to walk out of the hospital as one-eyed boys."

Doctors at the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital have treated over 360 pellet victims since July 8th – when Burhan Wani was martyred – and have performed over 400 eye surgeries.

Devastated by the atrocities, the doctors protested in Kashmir on Wednesday at the Government Medical College Srinagar holding up placards reading “Hear our silence, see our blindness” and “Stop killing innocent kids”.
