PESHAWAR: Police on Friday arrested a gang which kidnapped newborn babies from hospitals.

Hospital staff which included female doctors and nurses was part of the gang, SSP Abbas Marwat said while addressing a press conference.

The gang would take away newborn babies and hand over dead babies to parents. The kidnapped babies were then sold for Rs70,000 to Rs300,000, he added.

So far, the gang has sold nine babies, he said.

At least five women and two men are part of the gang but more people were expected to be involved, police said.

Security forces were able to recover one kidnapped baby. Search operations and arrests are underway to investigate the incident.

In the past several cases have been reported where parents allege that their newborn babies were kidnapped from hospitals. Last year in January a baby was kidnapped from Pakistan Institute of Medical Science, parents alleged.
