Pakistani music’s “queen of pop” Nazia Hassan’s 16th death anniversary is being observed on Saturday.
The iconic singer was born on April 3, 1965 and passed away on this date in 2000 due to lung cancer.
Nobody could have guessed that Nazia who started her music career at the age of 10, would go on to become one of the most conspicuous female singers of the subcontinent.
Her debut song “Aap Jaisa Koi” in 1980 shot her to fame. For Nazia, it was merely the beginning.
Along with her brother Zohaib Hassan, she released her album Disco Deewane in 1981.
Her songs ‘Dosti’, ‘Disco Deewane’, ‘Aankhen Milane Wale’, ‘Boom Boom’ and 'Dil ki Lagi' are still timeless.
Nazia was not only blessed with an angelic voice to serenade audiences, but also with an empathetic heart. Her philanthropic work made her win several accolades.
In 1991, she joined the United Nations and also worked for UNICEF.
For Nazia’s great achievements and contributions, the government of Pakistan presented Nazia “Pride of Performance” award, which is considered as the highest civil award of Pakistan. The award was presented to Nazia’s mother “Muniza Basir” by Pervez Musharraf on 23rd March, 2002.
