RAWALPINDI: Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) early Sunday in the morning of August 14, the day marking Pakistan's independence 70 years ago.

According to a statement by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the cross-border firing took place on the LoC in Nezapir sector near Rawlakot.

The unprovoked firing "started at 0200 hrs lasted till 0830 hrs on 14 August". ISPR said some shells landed at civilian houses, though nobody was reported hurt.

"India used all types of heavy weapons including mortar and artillery. Some of rounds landed at even civilian houses near LoC. No loss of life reported so far," it said.

Pakistani troops befittingly responded to Indian unprovoked firing, said the ISPR.

Pakistan DGMO calls his Indian counterpart

Later in the day, Pakistan's Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Major General Sahir Shamshad Mirza contacted his Indian counterpart on hotline and strongly protested over unprovoked firing and shelling by Indian troops on the LoC.

The unprovoked firing and shelling across the LoC targeted Pakistani checkposts as well as civilian population.

Protest against Indian atrocities in IoK

Meanwhile, South Asian Free Media Association (Safma) and civil society representatives staged a demonstration at Wagah border crossing against Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir and terrorism in Pakistan.

A large number of activists gathered at the famous border crossing on the Independence Day carrying banners and placards with slogans pertaining to human rights violations in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK) and terrorism inside Pakistan.

The speakers, in their address with attendees on the occasion, said that whether or not the Indian government understands, but Pakistan is a reality and India should act like a good neighbour, which in turn will help both countries fight terrorism.

They also lit candles sending out a goodwill message for the people of IoK and telling the world that Pakistan is a peaceful state.
