Panama leaks: FBR says letters issued to Maryam, Hussain Nawaz among others

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has sent letters to people whose names had appeared in the media in connection to the Panama leaks, a spokesman said Saturday.

An FBR spokesman confirmed that letters had also been written to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's children, Maryam Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, among other people whose names had appeared in the Panama Papers.

The letters ask if they own any offshore companies or not. If the individuals have offshore companies, the letter asks them to provide details.

Meanwhile, sources said that the letters should not be considered as a legal notice or the start of an investigation.

"The letters are informal. After receiving responses, the FBR will decide if formal investigation should be initiated or not," said a source privy to the development.

FBR spokesman Dr Iqbal said some letters had already been issued while others would be sent soon. He said that no letters were sent today as FBR offices were closed on Saturdays.
