KARACHI: Neither the Supreme court's orders, nor the directives of the chief minister appear to have had any impact on the local administration in Karachi.
Despite the passage of two days since the Eidul Azha holiday, several parts of the country's largest city were still littered with the waste of animals sacrificed for the religious festival earlier this week, causing difficulties for citizens and a hazard for their health.
But now Geo News has learnt that some trucks belonging to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation have picked up offal of animals from parts of the city, only to dump them onto the sea shore.
The already contaminated sea is getting more polluted as Ibrahim Haideri residents witness dozens of KMC trucks unloading animal waste on the shore, diffusing an unpleasant rotten smell all over the place.
When asked, a fisherman who lives and works in the locality said the government was cleaning the city but polluting the sea.
Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah had earlier announced that Station House Officers at every police station in the city would ensure cleanliness in their respective localities.
But, despite the passage of almost three days since Eid, the waste appears to be scattered in parts of the Karachi including Korangi and Landhi.
A case is also pending at the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding environmental pollution in the metropolis’ harbour and coastal areas owing to poisonous industrial waste. During the last hearing of the case on Sept 7, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali rejected a report regarding safe disposal of waste.
After the news was broken on Geo News, one driver was suspended from operations but dozens of trucks are still being used in dumping the animal offal into the sea. On the other hand, the administration has been the silent spectator and has yet to take further action.
