ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif spoke to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ahead of the premier’s scheduled address in the UNGA General Debate on Wednesday, sources told Geo News.
According to sources, COAS and PM discussed the regional situation during their conversation.
Director News Geo News Rana Jawad termed it a significant development, saying that after Uri attack, in which at least 17 Indian soldiers were killed, India has been threatening Pakistan.
He said that phone call means that the situation was serious.
“If PM is talking to Army chief over the phone from New York, it means that many decisions must have been discussed”, he added.
Rana Jawad further said that it also indicates that civil and military leadership was on same page in this regard.
PM Nawaz left Islamabad on Saturday on his most important foreign visit of the year to New York where he will attend the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
This will be the prime minister's fourth address to the 193-member world body in his third term in office.
He is expected to address the General Assembly on 21st September, wherein he will enunciate Pakistan's position on key global and regional issues but especially focus on the situation in Indian-occupied Jammu & Kashmir.
On Monday, Army chief took notice of Indian propaganda during a Corp Commander’s Conference held at GHQ.
The Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif presided over the meeting.
Taking note of a hostile narrative being propagated by India, the COAS said that we are fully cognizant and closely watching the latest happenings in the region and their impact on the security of Pakistan.
Expressing his satisfaction over the operational preparedness of the Army, COAS said that Armed Forces of Pakistan are fully prepared to respond to entire spectrum of direct and indirect threat.
"Pakistan's Armed Forces together with our resilient nation have surmounted every challenge and will thwart any sinister design against integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan in future as well," he said.
