US vows to work with Pakistan to combat threat of terrorism

WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday condemned the terrorist attack on the Police Training College in Quetta.

During a press briefing in Washington, spokesperson of US Department of State John Kirby said, "the United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific terrorist attack on the police training centre in Quetta that claimed the lives of over 60 people.”

He said, "we extend our condolences, of course, to the victims and their families, including the police cadets who were embarking on careers of public service,” further adding, “we stand with the people of Pakistan and the Government of Pakistan in this very difficult hour, and we will continue to work with our partners in Pakistan and across the region to combat the threat of terrorism.”

At least 61 security personnel were martyred and 117 injured when terrorists stormed the Police Training College located on Sariab Road late Monday night.

The terrorists entered the hostel of the centre and opened fire on the security personnel. According to personnel in the hostel, the terrorists started firing point blank.

On a question regarding media reports of three Taliban leaders in Pakistan to discuss the arrest of several Taliban leaders in Pakistan, including Mullah Nanai, who served as intelligence chief under Mullah Mansour, Kirby said: "We believe that Pakistan can directly contribute to regional stability by acting against militants on Pakistani soil who seek to attack its neighbours."
