KARACHI: Director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Shahid Hayat has fallen seriously ill and has been under treatment at a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, officials and family sources said Sunday.

Hayat, who has served on key posts including that of Additional IG Karachi, is currently on four-month training at Staff College Lahore. He, along with a delegation, had gone to Kenya on a study tour.

The FIA director contracted pneumonia in Nairobi, where he was admitted to a hospital two days ago. However, his condition worsened today and he was moved to the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).

Hayat's wife has reportedly reached Nairobi, while the medics have observed improvement in his condition.

Apart from working as Karachi police chief, Shahid Hayat also served as Sindh FIA director.

Following conflicting reports in the local media, a statement was issued by the Director FIA Sindh Asim Qaimkhani dispelling rumours. The statement confirmed Hayat is suffering from Double Pneumonia and fever adding that given "the severity of his condition, Mr Hayat was sedated and put on ventilator to release pressure on his lungs and allow them to heal."

The statement added that Shahid Hayat is "currently intubated" and requested the media to verify reports before airing them.
