Banners in Rawalpindi urge COAS to contest 2018 elections

RAWALPINDI: In a new development, banners were displayed in Rawalpindi in favour of Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, urging him to contest 2018 general elections.

The banners —displayed by a citizen named Sheikh Amjad — demanded that the two-year ban on an army chief over entering into politics after retirement should be removed.

When contacted by Geo News, Sheikh Amjad said that he expressed his love for the army chief through the banners and echoed the voice of the people to the high-ups.

In July, thousands of banners were displayed in several cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi and Hyderabad seeking the army chief’s intervention.

A full-fledged campaign was also launched on the social media giving the impression that martial law is about to be imposed.

In January, when General Raheel Sharif had announced that he will not take any extension and would retire in November this year, many banners were displayed in Islamabad and other cities asking COAS to not to talk of retirement.

General Raheel Sharif is due to retire on the 29th of current month.
