Pakistan supports expansion of non-permanent UN seats: Maleeha Lodhi

NEW YORK: Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi on Monday said that Pakistan supports expansion of non-permanent seats in the Security Council.

Lodhi was addressing the UN General Assembly on the topic of Security Council Reform.

She said that process of reform will make the platform more democratic, accountable and effective.

Lodhi said that the long deadlock in the way of reforms is due to certain states.

“These states want self-arrogated right to unequal status,” she said.

Pakistan is firmly against the expansion of permanent members’ seats, she said, adding that new permanent seats are antithesis of UN charter principles.
