Marriage controversy: Petition filed with ECP seeking Imran’s disqualification

ISLAMABAD: A petition was filed against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan on Tuesday demanding his disqualification for allegedly lying about his marriage.

The petition was filed by Munsaf Awan to the Election Commission of Pakistan. The petition stated that Imran Khan gave misleading statements about his marriage.

Due to the false information, action can be taken against Imran under Article 62/63, the petitioner stated.

The applicant said that Imran should be declared ineligible as a member of the ECP.

According to Mufti Saeed, the cleric who read the Nikkah for Imran Khan and Reham Khan, the PTI chief and the television journalist were married on October 31, 2014, (Muharram 7), not in January 2015 as earlier claimed.

Imran and Reham announced their marriage in January 2015, a few days before the cricketer-turned-politician ended his anti-government sit-in protest in Islamabad.
