Oil smuggling caused Gadani tragedy: Shipping ministry report

KARACHI: The tragic Gadani incident that claimed 25 lives took place due to smuggling of oil, the report by ministry for shipping and ports said on Thursday.

According to the federal ministry’s report sent to Prime Minister, the ship came to the Gadani port for breaking. The report raised the basic question that why did it contain 1,400,000 litres of diesel.

The report revealed that the ship that came for breaking also contained 1,600,000 litres of lubricants.

The report requested that customs officials should also be investigated in this regard.

Earlier, a committee was formed on the directives of the Prime Minister, including Federal Minister Rana Tanveer and Chief Secretary Balochistan.

The committee members reached the Gadani Ship-breaking Yard to examine the burn site.

At least 25 people were killed and 58 injured when the ship’s fuel tank exploded on November 1.
