WASHINGTON: Former caretaker Prime Minister Moeen Qureshi passed away in Washington on Wednesday, confirmed family sources.
The deceased was suffering from serious lungs ailment.
Qureshi served as caretaker Prime Minister from 18 July 1993 to 19 October 1993. He earlier served as Senior Vice President of the World bank.
Born on 26 June 1930 in Lahore, Qureshi`s father was a civil servant during British rule in the sub-continent. After completing his graduation from Government College Lahore, he did his Masters in Economics from Punjab University. On Fulbright scholarship, he completed his PhD from Indiana University.
Qureshi returned to Pakistan in 1955 and joined the Planning Commission; however he left the job after a year and went back to US to become an advisor in the IMF.
In 1960, he was deputed as Economic Advisor in Ghana. From 1974-77, he served IMF as its Executive Vice President.
He joined World Bank as Senior Vice President in 1987, after quitting his job in 1991; he settled in the US permanently and established his own firm, Emerging Market Association.
The deceased has two daughters and two sons. He was 86.
