Who is Mazhar Farooq?

Mazhar Farooq owned 200-acres of land before cases against him began in which he was sentenced to death and declared innocent by the Supreme Court.

According to a Geo News' correspondent, Mazhar's family has been pushed to poverty following the cases in different court over the past 24 years.

His land was sold as he and his family were fighting the cases in courts. Mazhar’s father, Farooq, was a local landlord.

He was found guilty in two murder cases which were lodged after some disputes with close relatives.

Mazhar now suffers from respiratory and chest infections which he contracted during his time in jail.

In a similar case, the Supreme Court had acquitted a murder convict Mazhar Hussain in October after 19 years in jail for lack of evidence.

The court observed that severe punishment should be awarded to the person who recorded false testimony.

Mazhar, a resident of Lahore, was detained by the police over alleged murder of Muhammad Ismail in 1997.
