General Raheel Sharif took command of the Pakistan Army on November 29, 2013, at a time when the Pakistani armed forces were busy in large-scale offensives against militants in Swat, Malakand Division and South Waziristan.
Gen Raheel, arguably the most popular military commander in country's history, then had several challenges facing him. Not only that he had to continue the ongoing military campaign against terrorists and miscreants in above-mentioned areas, but, he converting it into a decisive victory was also challenge, which the general undertook.
After the failure of talks with Taliban insurgents and subsequent hike in terror attacks across the country, the outgoing COAS decided to launch operation Zarb-e-Azb. The intent was to not just put an end to the insurgency, but to wipe out all forms of terrorism from across the country.
