Constable awaits proper treatment five years after blast

KARACHI: Once on guard, injured police constable Irshad Ahmed might never be able to stand on his own feet, in the line of duty.

Ahmed was injured in the blast that took place in Quaidabad area of Karachi in 2012.

But around five years on, his treatment has not yet completed, given the financial constraints and lack of support from the police department, for which he was always ready to put his life in danger.

The police department gave him a meagre sum of Rs30,000 for treatment. Since the money was not enough to fulfil his medical needs, Ahmed’s condition deteriorated by the day till it reached a point when the doctors had to amputate his leg, taking away the slight chance of him returning to duty.

While talking to Geo News, Ahmed’s family members said he has also been diagnosed with diabetes.

Being the sole bread-earner of his family, 43-year-old Ahmed has no one to look after his wife and seven children.

Ahmed’s injury was not the only tragedy that befell his family – his wife is suffering from cancer.

His family says the police department does not seem interested in his recovery and no one from the higher authorities has followed up on his treatment.

He was injured when the second blast took place in the area in 2012. The first blast had occurred near a garbage dump within the jurisdiction of Quaidabad police station. He along with others had gone to look into the issue when the second blast took place, claiming the life of then deputy superintendent of Quaidabad police, Kamal Mangan, and leaving Ahmed injured.
