PM lays foundation stone of Kurram Tangi Dam in N. Waziristan

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday laid foundation stone of the Kurram Tangi Dam in North Waziristan.

Addressing the ceremony after unveiling the plaque, the Prime Minister termed the occasion the beginning of a new era of development and progress in North Waziristan.

The project “symbolises the end of an era of fear”, said the Prime Minister, adding that it was tantamount to “criminal negligence that darkness was allowed to prevail” in the country earlier.

The Prime Minister urged the opposition to quit negative politics of confrontation.

“We have to utilise our force to end poverty and illiteracy in the country. A wonderful future awaits us. For that we must get rid of outdated politics,” the Prime Minister stressed.

The Kurram Tangi Dam will be completed at a cost of 12.6 billion rupees in two phases. The first phase will be completed in three years.

The dam will have capacity of storing 1.2 million acres feet of water. On completion, it will generate 83.4 megawatts electricity along with irrigating 362,000 acres of land in North Waziristan and Bannu.

Federal Minister Khawaja Asif, Akram Khan Durrani, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Adviser to the Prime Minister Engineer Amir Muqam and Ameer JUI(F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman were also present on the occasion.
