25th Aalmi Mushaira marks silver jubilee, strikes the right chords

KARACHI: The 25th Aalmi Mushaira was held Wednesday night at the Expo Centre, attracting local and international poets alike, in a bid to promote culture and Urdu language.

The poetry recitation event is an annual celebration of verse that has been happening since a quarter of the century, bringing a fresh relief from the hubbub of the country. Last night marked its silver jubilee.

Famed poets from Pakistan and other nations mesmerised the audience with their exemplary work.

The event, taking place since 1989, forms a crucial component in the country’s literary community. It also offers a platform for experienced poets to showcase their latest work and for the young and aspiring ones to interact with the former.

A public favourite from last night was Indian poet Shabina Adeeb, who made the listeners sway in merriment and say praise.

Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair and Mayor of Karachi Waseem Akhtar were also present among the attendees at Expo Centre on Wednesday. Akhtar announced to name a road in the metropolis in honour of Azhar Abbas Hashmi – one of the poetry gala’s founders.

Earlier, Arts Council of Pakistan president Ahmed Shah during the event’s press conference had stated, “We are the sons of the soil and want this city to light up. […] It’s not for one section, group or party, but rather is meant for everyone,” a local media outlet reported.
