Karachi to get 600 new buses, CM approves plan

KARACHI: The Sindh government has finally taken note of the dilapidated condition of public transport in the city. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved a plan to introduce 600 intercity buses in the metropolis.

The decision came during a meeting held on Wednesday, presided by the Chief Minister, where the Blue Line project also came under discussion.

The CM said that the Sindh government will help transporters in generating funds for the new buses, while their insurance will be done by the Sindh Insurance Company.

Elaborating himself he said that the Sindh government will give Rs2 billion through Modraba, and provide banks 30 percent credit risk guarantee.

He added that the construction of roads and underpasses in the city was underway, and in the next phase a plan for buses will be intitiated.

The transport minister Nasir Shah told the meeting that the city needed 8000 new buses.

The city does not have proper public transport, and buses heaped with passengers till the ceiling are a common sight. People who use these buses to commute pose danger to their life, as accidents are common.

In February this year a deadly accident at Toll Plaza killed six and injured over 27.
