Police officials said the suspect’s accomplices opened fire on police in an attempt to help the suspect escape. Riffat was shot dead in retaliatory firing by the police, it was alleged.

Riffat was taken into police custody for the alleged murder of a journalist a few days ago and was involved in 14 other cases.

Dacoits' killed in Gujranwala

On the other hand, an alleged police encounter near Gujranwala’s Awan Chowk led to two suspected dacoits being killed when their accomplices opened fire on a police van.

A police spokesperson explained that while the suspects were being transported in a police van to help authorities recover weapons from a hideout, their accomplices opened fire on the police party.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, the suspects were killed by the firing of their own comrades, the police claimed.
