Lahore varsity professor among five held in Karachi for 'Daesh links'

Suspects were planning to carry out targeted attacks using drones, according to officials

KARACHI: A university professor and his niece are among five people detained by security agencies for their alleged links with banned outfit Daesh during an operation in Karachi’s Sharqi area on Monday.

Sources said the main suspect is an engineering professor at a university in Lahore. A female suspect arrested in the operation is said to be his niece. 

Officials have not disclosed the identities of the suspects, nor the university's name as further investigation is under way. 

According to sources, the suspects were planning to carry out targeted attacks in the city using explosives fitted on drones. 

The operation was conducted by the Sindh Counter Terrorism Department on a tip-off by intelligence agencies.
