British police arrest five of Pakistani family in connection with London attacks

LONDON: British police have detained five members of a Pakistani family, from a house in Ilford, Eastern London, in connection with the recent London attacks.

Police also searched the family's home, cars, and nearby businesses. During the search, entry of local residents was limited; only those carrying IDs were allowed to enter the road.

Three men last Saturday rammed a van through crowds of pedestrians on London Bridge, before attacking revellers with knives, leaving seven dead and 48 in the hospitals.

The three men involved in the attack were confronted and shot dead by armed officers within eight minutes of the first call.

The new arrests come after British security authorities released names and photographs of three suspects who were involved in the heinous incident.

Two of them were named on June 5 as 27-year-old Pakistani-born Briton Khuram Shazad Butt and 30-year-old Rachid Redouane from Barking. The latter also used the name Rachid Elkhdar with a different date of birth: July 31, 1991.

The third man is 22-year-old Youssef Zaghba, an Italian-Moroccan who was registered as an Italian living overseas and whose parents had separated.

Italy's main newspapers said Zaghba's mother was from Bologna and his father was Moroccan.

British police on Sunday took into custody 12 people after raiding several addresses in Barking, a suburb to the east of the capital.
