KARACHI: Five inmates of Central Jail Karachi were involved in helping two others escape the prison late at night on June 14, sources said.
According to sources, an investigation into the case has revealed that Sheikh Mumtaz alias Firon and Ahmed alias Munna were helped by inmates, two of whom are accused of their involvement in the attack on Jinnah International Airport in June 2014 – Nadeem alias Burger and Asif Zaheer. Others include Qasim Rasheed and Naseem alias Firon.
After breaking the jail, Mumtaz and Ahmed escaped on two motorbikes on which their brothers — Mumtaz's brother Mubeen and Nadeem's Iqbal — were waiting, sources said.
It has also been found out that both the prisoners were provided with blades from outside, which they cut the bars with. Mumtaz and Ahmed were present in the jail's judicial complex for a hearing when they managed to escape, an official had said. According to sources, it was during the hearing that they were provided with the blades with.
After the jail break incident, 12 police personnel, including the jail superintendent and deputy jail superintendent, were arrested.
The two were imprisoned by the counter-terrorism department in 2013 for their involvement in dozens of target killings.
