Anti-judiciary remarks: Petition seeks disqualification of PM, others

LAHORE: A petition was filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif and 15 other parliamentarians for issuing statements against the judiciary, Geo News has learnt.

Amna Malik, member of Civil Society Network, filed the petition in the apex court's Lahore Registry, stating names of 17 members of the Parliament who, according to her, repeatedly made remarks against courts before hearing of the Panama Papers leak case and following submission of the joint investigation team (JIT) report.

It contended that by doing so these parliamentarians, who also include PM Nawaz Sharif, CM Shehbaz Sharif and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, committed contempt of court.

"They have also violated Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan by issuing statements against the judiciary," the petition mentioned.

Malik said in the petition that the Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker were also approached on the matter, but they turned down the applications.

She prayed to the court to order disqualification of all these parliamentarians and initiating contempt of court proceedings against them.

LHC dismisses Imran's petition seeking disqualification of Punjab CM

Also on Tuesday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) turned down Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan's petition seeking disqualification of Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The petition accused the Punjab CM of involvement in "corruption and money laundering".
