KARACHI: The last accused in the murder of the then KESC managing director, Shahid Hamid, was arrested on Saturday, police informed Geo News.

Mehboob Ghufran, alias Shehzada, was arrested from Sindh's Jamshoro, police said. He was allegedly present with Saulat Mirza and Minhaj Qazi at the time of Hamid’s killing in 1997 in Karachi.

According to the police, Ghufran drove all the accused, including Mirza and Qazi, to the site and later took his accomplices to his residence to spend the night after Hamid’s murder.

Ghufran was the last accused in Hamid’s murder case, police said.

Mirza, one of the prime accused in the murder case, was arrested by slain police officer Chaudhry Aslam in 1998 from Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport.

During the investigation, Mirza named his accomplices and confessed to having killed Hamid.

An anti-terrorism court sentenced Mirza to death. He was affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. In 2015, Mirza was executed in Balochistan’s Machh Jail.

Qazi, another accused in the murder case, was arrested by the Rangers and placed under detention for inquiry in his alleged involvement in terrorism cases. He was later handed over to the police and was formally arrested in Hamid’s murder case.
