LONDON: Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, returned home on Friday after undergoing a successful surgery for throat cancer.

The news was confirmed by Kulsoom's grandson in a tweet.

Kulsoom Nawaz stayed in the hospital overnight on Thursday before being discharged to return home and recover. Her chemotherapy treatment is scheduled to start from next week.

Earlier, Nawaz had accompanied his wife to a central London clinic where Kulsoom Nawaz underwent surgery.

He saw her off before she was taken to the operation theatre at the hospital. Special prayers were also held at the home of Hasan Nawaz before the former premier's wife left for the hospital.

Kulsoom Nawaz underwent medical check-ups in London, after which doctors diagnosed her with throat cancer. Maryam Nawaz — her daughter — later confirmed on Twitter that her mother was diagnosed with lymphoma, the cancer of the lymph nodes.

Doctors had told Kulsoom Nawaz her throat cancer was curable, according to sources and added that her treatment included chemotherapy.

However, as per doctors, a lot depends on how well she reacts to chemotherapy treatment.

Kulsoom Nawaz left for London ahead of the scrutiny of her nomination papers for the upcoming NA-120 by-elections. The seat fell vacant after the Supreme Court on July 28 disqualified Sharif in the Panama case over charges of concealing his salary from a Dubai-based company that he claims he never received.
