Asma Jahangir group clinches top spots in SCBA elections

LAHORE: Asma Jahangir led-Independent group has managed to clinch top spots in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections, according to the unverified results of the polls.

Syed Muhammad Kaleem Ahmed Khursheed has been elected as the president with 1,145 votes, while his opponent Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari of Hamid Khan-led Professional group secured 1,062 votes.

On the other hand, Independent group’s Safdar Tarrar has been elected as general secretary with 1,098 votes, while his opponent Mian Aslam of Professional Group secured 638 votes.

Qamar-uz-Zaman Qureshi secured the post of vice-president with 1,159 votes.

Speaking to media after the win, Khursheed remarked: “I have always followed the law and fought for the sake of Pakistan.”

He added that he will continue to work for the rights lawyers and people belonging to different professionals.

In Peshawar, Professional group’s candidate Hafiz Abdul Rehman got the most votes, with 67 votes in favour of him, while Independent group’s candidate Syed Pir Kaleem Ahmed Khursheed secured 66 votes.

Moreover, the Professional group’s candidate for vice-president Tehmina Mehmoobullah also secured a win in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 72 votes, while her opponent Malik Masoor secured 58 votes.

For the post of secretary, Independent group’s candidate Saddar Hussain secured a win with 77 votes, while professional group’s candidate Mian Muhammad Aslam Pervaiz secured 55 votes. 

The polling started at 9:00AM continued till 5:00PM without any interval. Polling was held in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Abbottabad, where polling stations have been established.

The voter turnout was 74% with 958 of the registered 1,287 lawyers voting in the elections. As many as 44 candidates contested the election for 22 seats of the association.

Chairman Election Board Afrasiyab Khan is monitoring the election process.

Last year, Rashid Rizvi, of the Hamid Khan-led group, was elected the SCBA president.

Earlier, a close competition was expected between the candidates of Asma Jahangir group and Hamid Khan group for the seat of president.

Syed Muhammad Kaleem Ahmed Khursheed was the nominee of Jahangir's Independent group, while Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ansari enjoys the support of Hamid Khan-led Professional group.
